Back in the pirogue, this time exploring Fort Proctor, about an hour southeast of New Orleans, near Shell Beach. The fort was built on the edge of Lake Borgne in the 1850s, but after the artillery developments made during the Civil War, it was deemed obsolete, and swallowed by the lake in the 1950s. It’s now accessible by boat only—a fairly short paddle out from the closest marina.
