The Thao family, originally from Laos, moved to Fresno, California in 1988, after eight years in the Ban Vinai Refugee Camp in Thailand. Kong Thao (pictured below), then three years old, now helps to run the farm, which utilizes about 25 acres to grow around 300 varieties of produce, which he and his siblings sell at farmers markets in southern California—most notably, Santa Monica Farmers Market. Kong recently offered a tour of the tour, along with samples of the early-summer harvest.
