The Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Lake Borgne Surge Barrier, started in 2009 and completed in 2013, was built to help prevent devastating storm surges from reaching New Orleans from the Gulf of Mexico. At over a mile long, and has been nicknamed “The Great Wall of Louisiana.”
